A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. Protoplasm is the living substance of the cell. At HSC level, protoplasm is usually explained as the living part that includes cytoplasm and nucleus. Cell theory explains that living cellular organisms are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and new cells arise from pre-existing cells.

Main Lesson Body

Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Every cellular organism is made of one or more cells. A unicellular organism performs all life activities within one cell, while a multicellular organism depends on many specialized cells working together.

The living substance inside the cell is called protoplasm. In HSC Biology, protoplasm is usually explained as the living part of the cell that includes cytoplasm and nucleus. Cytoplasm is the region between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. The nucleus stores genetic information and helps control cell activities.

Cell theory explains the cellular foundation of life. Its major statements are: all living cellular organisms are made of one or more cells; the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life; and new cells arise from pre-existing cells.

Common Mistakes

Mistake: Cells are found only in animals. Correction: Cells are found in plants, animals, fungi, protists and bacteria.
